Units and mercenary groups
Over ninety units and heroes across four factions and six mercenary groups. This page is the map of that space — what exists, how it is organised, and how to learn a unit properly rather than reading a number off a wiki.
How the roster is organised
The unit pool is split three ways, and every match draws from all three:
| Layer | Count | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Main faction army | 4 factions | Your bread and butter — workers, infantry, vehicles, air, siege and the faction's own mechanic. |
| Mercenary group | 6 in Early Access, 7 at 1.0 | A bolt-on battle group of specialists. One per match. |
| Hero commander | 15 available | A single powerful on-field unit with abilities and persistent progression. |
The store listing puts the total at over ninety unique units and heroes. Matches support 1k+ units supported, which is why late-game fights look the way they do.

Signature units by faction
| Faction | Named units we can source | Role in the army |
|---|---|---|
| Protectorate | Veteran commandos, Mech divisions, Heavy armour | Combined arms |
| Grell | Harbinger, Reaver, Spreading biomass | Territory and biomass |
| Legion | Thralls, Fanatics, Terror Tank | Mass and attrition |
| Xol | Self-evolving machines, Advanced robotics | Technology and adaptation |
The six mercenary groups
Names and taglines as published by Starlance Studios. The seventh group is a 1.0 roadmap item.
Your mercenary pick is the cheapest way to change how your faction plays without relearning it. If a matchup keeps beating you, change the merc before you change the faction.
The fastest way to learn a unit
- Open the Unit Test Map. Spawn the unit and whatever you think beats it. Two minutes there beats twenty minutes of reading.
- Watch what it does to your supply. Supply cost against battlefield impact is the comparison that matters, and it is the one tables rarely give you honestly.
- Then find it in a real game. A unit that tests well in isolation can still be unaffordable in the build you actually run.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask about this, pulled from the Steam discussion boards and search data.
How many units does ZeroSpace have?
The official Steam listing states over ninety unique units and heroes across the four main factions, six mercenary groups and the hero roster. Matches support 1,000+ units on the field.
How many mercenary groups are there?
6 in Early Access: The Marran, The Valkaru, Free Corsairs, Arandi Empire, Cha'kru Kingdom and Endari. A seventh is listed on the roadmap for the 1.0 release.
Where can I find exact unit stats?
In the game's Unit Test Map, which is always current. We deliberately do not publish stat tables during active balance work — see the note at the top of this page.
Can I use more than one mercenary group per match?
No. One main faction, one mercenary group, one hero — that trio is your loadout for the match.
